Sorry seems to be the hardest (and longest) word

13th July 2009

Wirral Council finally received a long overdue apology from Tory Councillor Denis Knowles last night after he was forced to apologise before having his suspension from the Tory Party lifted. Cllr Knowles issued his apology at last nights full Council meeting and indicated that he had been asked to undertake diversity awareness training.

Cllr Knowles was suspended from the Tory Party in March after writing on his Facebook page "...an unusual group of boys delivering in Seacombe this weekend, of the limp-wristed variety and definately NOT local"

The comments drew criticism from prominent gay rights campaigners and senior Members of Parliament and was reported in the National press prior to Cllr Knowles' suspension from the Tory Party pending an investigation.

At Council last night the Leader of the Tories, Jeff Green, accepted Cllr Knowles apology and informed Council that his suspension had been lifted on Monday 5th July. This drew criticsm from Labour Councillors who called it a sham suspension saying that Denis has been out campaigning and delivering leaflets ever since his apparent suspension from the Party.
